I was reporting person. On Thursday 02/27/08, someone attempted to steal our car parked on the street. The passenger window was shattered. I phoned the Oakland Police Department, and they responded that they do not come out for, as they termed it, vandalism. OPD stated that unless the steering column was tampered with they do not send officers out. They instructed me to download a Citizen’s Crime Report from their website & mail it in.
Between 11:00 pm 03/05/08 and 6:00 am Thursday 03/06/08, someone stripped the same car & left it on cement blocks. Once again, I phoned Oakland Police Department. The dispatcher, once again, told me to download a form, and mail it in. I explained the severity of the theft and explained that their website states the mail-in form is used for theft / damage under $400.00. I called numerous times before speaking with a Sergeant. At one point I was told to stop calling. I’m aware that OPD is short staffed & dealing with escalating violent crimes, but my first call was at 6:00 am, I don’t think any heinous crimes were happening at the time and I don’t understand why they refused to come and take a report. I never received an explanation as to why they wanted me to use a mail in report when their own website clearly states “for theft / damage under 400.00”. AFTER NUMOROUS PHONE CALLS, Officers arrived 6 hours later to take a report for GRAND THEFT. The car is still sitting on Knoll, pending removal by the insurance company.
Even more frightening is that after the window was broken, the car was kept in the driveway (not viewable from the street). The evening I pulled the car out & parked it on the Street, was when this crime occurred. Was someone watching our home?
